One of the biggest jerk-off questions of the day deals with the effect of third Party Presidential candidacies on the two Party system. To assume that 50% of Johnson’s vote and all of Stein’s vote is to assume unknown preferences and that is, who is the second choice of these voters and that these voters faced with a Trump/Clinton scenario would have chosen to vote instead of not voting at all like close to the 50% of all other eligible Americans.
Secondly, if ½ of the Jonson voters voted for Hillary it is safe to assume that the other half would have voted for Trump, thus negating their influence. It’s also quite possible more than half would have voted for Trump as the Libertarian Party is closer in philosophy to the Republican Party than the Democrats.
And we need more, not less Third Parties to present additional ideas and voting alternatives to the American voter.
“It’s impossible to know how an election could have gone under hypothetical scenarios, but the Johnson campaign regularly said they thought they were pulling support equally from would-be Trump supporters and would-be Clinton voters. Stein’s campaign, meanwhile, made a constant, explicit appeal to disenchanted Democrats and former supporters of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.”
“If Johnson and Stein weren’t in the race, it’s also possible many of their supporters may have stayed home. But if about half of Johnson’s supporters would have voted for Clinton over Trump, and if most of Stein’s supporters broke for the Democrats, the electoral map would have been decidedly different.” http://www.cnn.com/2016/11/10/politics/gary-johnson-jill-stein-spoiler/index.html
A writer of opinions is supposed to have one. As I am not sure about the motivation behind the Stein promoted recounts I am a bit flummoxed. Is it really for the greater good? Is it a sly way to help Hillary? Do they know of shenanigans at the voting booth? The recount is costing more money than all of Stein’s campaign, the source and what they hope to achieve?
“The Stein/Baraka Green Party Campaign is launching an effort to ensure the integrity of our elections. We are raising money to demand recounts in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania– three states where there is a significant need to verify machine-counted vote totals. Please donate to this initiative today.”
“To give you a sense of the problem, the voting machines used in Wisconsin were banned in California after they were shown to be highly vulnerable to hacking and malicious programming due to lacking security features.” http://www.jill2016.com/recount_splash?splash=1
