I was surprised that the Hillary Clinton spokesperson, Brian Fallon, used the Everybody Does It defense when the Inspector General of the State Department criticized Ms. Clinton yesterday after his investigation led to the conclusion that she improperly used a private server for government correspondence. The Everybody Does It defense is actually quite offensive as for its substance and tenor. Everybody does It, popularized by a car speeding in the freeway and then stopped by the Highway Patrol is not a real defense nor is this:
“GOP will attack HRC because she is running for President, but IG report makes clear her personal email use was not unique at State Dept” Brian Fallon @brianefallon
This defense is tactically wrong on so many levels and Mr. Fallon should know this. Bad behavior by others is not a defense for anyone to perform bad behavior. It also overlooks a couple of points. The first is in this modern era it is irresponsible to point out errors that were made twenty years ago as an excuse for today. Also, Ms. Clinton is the only Secretary of State to exclusively use a private server.
“The first is that Clinton is the first and, to date, only secretary of state to exclusively use a private email address and server to conduct her business as the nation’s top diplomat. All of the other names above maintained both a private and a government-issued email address. That alone doesn’t make her guilty. But it does make her unique.”
“Second, Clinton is the only one of that group who is currently (a) running for president and (b) the very likely nominee for one of the country’s two major parties.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2016/05/25/hillary-clintons-email-problems-just-got-much-worse/
While the use of the server is a telling example of behavior it is the after events that I also find troubling. While Ms. Clinton and her aides have repeatedly the private E-mail/server investigation was nothing to be concerned about, the Clinton team was refusing to cooperate with the investigation. This is akin to perjury as both are after the event facts. If Ms. Clinton as she stated over and over, believe this investigation to be a small thing why did she not cooperate as she did with the fools who ran the useless Benghazi hearings. The actions that she and her team employed were acts of obstruction and entirely unworthy of a candidate for President of the United States, even if Everybody Does It.
Clinton and her top staff did not cooperate with the investigation, which was requested by current Secretary of State John Kerry. She, her former chief of staff Cheryl Mills and top deputies Jake Sullivan and Huma Abedin are among those who declined interviews. Kerry and his predecessors Madeleine Albright, Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice, however, did interviews.” http://www.politico.com/story/2016/05/hillary-clinton-email-inspector-general-report-223553#ixzz49hEHbwdg
